At an event in Tokyo yesterday, Sony announced its next-generation portable entertainment system (codename: NGP) – and it will come in both 3G and Wi-Fi models when it debuts later this year. No information was released on price or carrier partners in the United States.
The NGP goes up against some stiff competition in Nintendo’s forthcoming 3DS, as well as smartphones, which are privy to increasingly sophisticated catalogs of gaming apps.
The NGP boasts a multitouch 5-inch OLED display, 3G, Wi-Fi, GPS, a rear-mounted touchpad, accelerometer, an electronic compass and cameras on both the front and back.
The company also announced PlayStation Suite (PS Suite), which will closely coordinate with NGP. PlayStation Suite will feature newly developed and released game content for Android-based portable devices that can then be played on the NGP. Sony says the move will allow users access to “more casual experiences that typify the mobile market place.”
