Sony has restyled its three eReader devices with the addition of touchscreens, a slimmed-down design, better e-ink displays and more competitive prices.
The changes come amid substantial price drops in eReader prices, with Borders becoming the latest company to cut the cost of its hallmark eReader devices.
Sony added a five-inch touchscreen to its Reader Pocket Edition after the full touchscreen on the Reader Touch and Daily Edition models proved popular. All three devices had their screens updated with E Ink Pearl displays.
The new Pocket Edition eReader has 2GB of onboard memory and retails for about $179. The updated Touch Edition retails for about $229 and has a six-inch touchscreen and up to 32GB of expandable memory, with the ability to play MP3 and AAC audio files.
Sony added Wi-Fi and basic Web browsing to the Reader Daily Edition, which connects to Sony’s eBook store on AT&T’s 3G network. The updated, Web-enabled device is expected to cost $299 and will be available in November. The Reader Pocket and Touch Editions are available now online and in Sony retail stores.
Steve Haber, president of Sony’s digital reading unit, said in a statement that the company was expanding eReader sales into several new markets, including Italy, Spain, Australia, Japan and China.
