Sprint Extends Half-Off Promo, May Kill Contracts

By Andrew Berg | January 6, 2016

Sprint today announced that it will extend its promotion that offers new customers 50 percent off their previous carrier’s bill.

Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure said in a statement that the response to the promotion has been “outstanding.”

“We experienced record sales during Black Friday and continue to see high demand,” Claure said. “After receiving such positive feedback from customers and hearing from our salespeople about store traffic, I knew we had to extend this exciting promotion to give even more wireless subscribers the opportunity to experience Sprint’s award-winning network and take advantage of the best value in wireless.”

The announcement comes on the same day that Sprint employee posted to Reddit that the company may be looking to end two-year contracts and device subsidies.

Originally reported by DSLReports, the employee wrote that the change has been a “long time coming…effective 1/8/16, new Sprint customers will only be able to do full SRP, Lease, and EasyPay for new devices on any of Sprint’s plans.”

It was just last week that reports surfaced that AT&T was getting out of the contract business, deferring instead to its equipment installment plan, AT&T Next.

Shares of Sprint were up slightly to $3.59 in after-hours trading.
