Sprint is having a hard time doing anything right lately, as the carrier recently fell to the bottom of Consumer Reports’ annual cell-phone serivce ratings.
According to the survey, which covered opinions from over 58,000 respondents, Sprint received what Consumer Reports called “dismal marks” in categories that rated value, voice, text and 4G reliability.
Meanwhile, Verizon Wireless finished tops amongst the four major wireless carriers, followed by AT&T and T-Mobile, which Consumer Reports said receieved “ho-hum marks.’ AT&T was the lone carrier to receive the top rating for the reliability of its 4G service.
The standouts in the survey, however, were smaller MVNOs, such as Consumer Cellular, which runs on AT&T’s network and scored tops overall in the survey. This isn’t the first time smaller MVNOs have scored better than major carriers in the Consumer Reports’ survey. Consumer Cellular and TracFone have consistently rated better than the major standard providers in customer satisfaction.
“Smaller, no-frills, no-contract and prepaid service providers continue to do a better job of satisfying customers, and provide an increasingly viable alternative to some of the expensive, long-term contracts that many consumers find themselves locked into,” said Glenn Derene, of Consumer Reports.
The Consumer Reports survey also revealed that among the respondents who had data plans that set limits on usage, 38 percent used only half, or less, of their monthly allotment. As a result, many customers may well have overpaid for their wireless service.
