Sprint Offers Free Calling to Mexico

By Ben Munson | October 3, 2014

Sprint today introduced free calling to Mexico and nine other Hispanic and Latin America countries.

Customers who sign up for Sprint’s $60 Unlimited Plan, Family Share Pack plans and Simply Unlimited now through Dec. 5 will get 500 minutes monthly for calls to Mexico, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, El Salvador, Peru and Costa Rica.

“In the U.S., 36 percent of Hispanics are foreign-born and rely on their mobile phones to stay connected, especially in those special moments when they can’t physically be there. As a Latino, I know first-hand the need to communicate with loved ones internationally and how our mobile phones and a great plan can be the bridge that connects us to those we care about,” Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure said in a statement.

The deal lasts through December 2015 and after that reverts to a $5 monthly charge. Customers who exceed the 500 minute allowance will be charged $0.01 per minute for calls to Mexico and “low per minute rates” are offered for the other countries on the list.

Sprint’s international calling deal follows the carrier’s move earlier in the week to double the data on some of its Family Share Pack plans. AT&T was first out of the gate with a double-data promo and Verizon followed up shortly after Sprint’s response.

Sprint’s new promotion comes almost exactly one year after T-Mobile rolled out unlimited international roaming as part of its Uncarrier 3.0 announcement.
