Sprint says it plans to offer its customers more device options by launching devices running on Qualcomm’s Brew Mobile Platform (MP), which can support both feature phones and smartphones.

A press release announcing the move did not specify when phones using Brew MP will be on the market, and a spokesperson was not immediately available.

By supporting both high-performance mobile Java and native applications on Brew MP, Sprint says it can offer more advanced devices to a broader set of customers.

Earlier this year, Qualcomm canceled its annual Brew conference, citing the tough economy. Since then, it also has acquired Cox Communications as a Brew customer.

In July, Verizon Wireless renewed its support for Brew, announcing an agreement with Qualcomm to promote growth on the platform, including a focus on improving the app discovery process for customers.
