Sprint today announced availability of its second 4G-capable phone, the Android-powered Samsung Epic 4G. The Epic is available for $249.99 with a 2-year contract.
Sprint is now the third carrier in the United States to launch a member of Samsung’s Galaxy S line of Super-AMOLED Android smarpthones. The Epic 4G differs from its AT&T (Captivate) and T-Mobile (Vibrant) variants in that it features a slide-out qwerty keyboard and compatibility with Sprint’s 4G WiMax service.
Aside from its keyboard and 4G capability, the Epic features similar specs to those on the Captivate and Vibrant, including a 4-inch touchscreen, 1GHz Hummingbird processor, 5 megapixel camera, 720p video capture, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
The Epic 4G is offered opposite Sprint’s other 4G handset, the HTC Evo, which features a similar line of high-end specs but does not have a slide-out qwerty keyboard.
Samsung’s Galaxy S line has done quite well as of late. Just yesterday the company announced that it had shipped one million Galaxy S phones since it was released on July 15.
Sprint currently offers 4G service in 48 markets and expects to launch 4G service in multiple markets, including Boston, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Denver, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis, New York, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.
