T-Mobile is doing everything it can to be seen as offering the new iPhones for less than anyone else.
On Wednesday the Un-Carrier said it will offer the 16GB versions of the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus for just $5 and $9 per month respectively.
That monthly price sounds great but it obviously hinges on the trade-in value for a customer’s old phone. Customers who choose the option will need to trade in an iPhone 6, meaning that switchers will have to completely pay off their old devices with their existing carrier.
For instance, customers who trade in an iPhone 5s would bring the price of a new 16GB iPhone 6s down to $10 a month. T-Mobile said that users looking for a Note 5 or Note edge can get one for $15 a month “with trade-in of almost any other phone you own like iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3, HTC M8 and Motorola Droid Turbo.”
The cheap monthly installment on the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus is in lieu of taking T-Mobile up on its offer to pay off the remaining device balance with their old carrier. In that case, the 16GB version of the iPhone 6s will still cost $20 per month.
The Un-carrier’s says that those customers who already pre-ordered their new iPhone with trade-in will get an upfront bill credit.
