Tellabs Smart GGSN Empowers 3G Networks with 4G Performance

By Andrew Berg | March 23, 2010

As a torrent of mobile Internet traffic floods their 3G networks, mobile carriers are increasingly concerned about capacity and reducing costs. Tellabs says it has a solution: the new Smart GGSN (gateway GPRS support node), which is based on the Tellabs SmartCore 9100 Platform.

“User demand for mobile Internet is rising daily. We help operators succeed by empowering their 3G networks to handle a deluge of data while dramatically reducing costs,” said Rehan Jalil, senior vice president of mobile Internet at Tellabs, in a statement. “Tellabs Smart GGSN handles 4G-sized data flows in 3G networks, while enabling a smooth migration from 3G to an evolved, distributed 4G packet core.”

According to a press release, Tellabs Smart GGSN can cut capital expenses, shrink the equipment footprint and reduce power consumption.

Interoperability is key to new solutions. Tellabs SmartCore 9100 Platform can concurrently run 3G GGSN and 4G packet core applications. Such capability enables a smooth transition, through a simple software upgrade, from 3G GGSNs to an evolved 4G packet core, the company says.

Tellabs Smart GGSN allows carriers to prioritize critical traffic through analytics and create a two-sided revenue model by monetizing off-portal services and content. In 2009, Tellabs acquired WiChorus, which adds mobile packet core technology and Internet Protocol expertise to the Tellabs mobile backhaul solution.
