U.S. Cellular Completes Second Wave of LTE Rollout With Help from NSN

By Andrew Berg | January 16, 2013

Nokia Siemens Network (NSN) announced today that it has completed the second phase of U.S. Cellular’s LTE service in a number of markets, adding  Radio Access Network (RAN) and Mobile Management Entity (MME) technology to 11 markets, covering select cities in Illinois, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington and West Virginia.

NSN was selected by U.S. Cellular to provide RAN and MME technology for this portion of its LTE rollout in the markets stated above.

Previously, NSN deployed Evolved Packet Core (EPC) and Home Subscriber Services (HSS) in the first wave of the U.S. Cellular’s LTE rollout in the markets mentioned. The installation of the LTE core was included in nine separate markets.

NSN has been doing well recently, giving a boost to Nokia Corporation’s earnings. Nokia recently revised its fourth quarter earnings for both its Devices and Services division, as well as NSN.

Nokia said it estimates NSN’s net sales in the fourth quarter 2012 were approximately $5.3 billion and non-IFRS operating margin was between 13 and 15 percent, which compares to the previous outlook of approximately positive 8 percent, plus or minus four percentage points.

NSN reports it currently has 77 commercial references in place for the delivery of LTE and 206 WCDMA radio customers.
