U.S. Cellular Finally Gets the iPhone

Customers of regional carrier U.S. Cellular can finally get their hands on an iPhone. The carrier announced it will begin carrying the iPhone 4S, 5C and 5S beginning November 8. 

A spokeswoman for U.S. Cellular said that pricing information for the devices will be announced in the coming days. 

The carrier had long maintained that the financial risk of carrying the iPhone, with its notoriously high subsidies, was just to great. 

In November of 2011, then CEO Mary Dillon said during an earnings call that U.S. Cellular had the option to add the iPhone to its device lineup, but decided against it. 

Dillon said “it didn’t make sense for our business economically.”

That was following Sprint’s deal with Apple to carry the iPhone. Sprint is now in the process of shelling out a whopping $15.5 billion over years for the iconic device. 

Dillon has since departed the carrier, which is owned by TDS, leaving the reins to Ken Meyers who took over as president and CEO. 

News of the iPhone at U.S. Cellular comes after the company last week unveiled new shared data plans.
