U.S. Cellular Moday launched Vehicle Monitoring, a service that will allow customers to track and control various aspects of their vehicles.
The $10 per month service can be added to any Shared Data plan, and the device itself is available online and in U.S. Cellular stores today for $99.99 with a two-year agreement.
Vehicle Monitoring allows users to remotely control, monitor and track their vehicle in real-time via a smartphone or computer.
Specifically, the device is able to track a vehicle’s location in real-time and create geofences (up to 6) and speed parameters. The owner of the vehicle can then be alerted when the parameters are broken. Obviously aimed at the parents of new drivers, the device will also track driving history, and allow users to see past trips on a map and find where they last parked your vehicle.
U.S. Cellular says the system also allows users of the system to control various aspects of their vehicles from their cell phones.
The device is similar to those offered by insurance companies as a way of bringing down rates. The Vehicle Monitoring module plugs into the vehicle’s OBD-II connector port, which is usually located under the steering column. It is compatible with most vehicles manufactured after 1996.
