Unlocked iPhone 4 Graces Apple Store Shelves

By Andrew Berg | June 14, 2011

Apple today made an unlocked iPhone 4 available at its online store. The unlocked iPhone 4 will run on any GSM network and carries an unsubsidized price of $649.

While Apple pitches the phone online as able to run on “the supported GSM wireless carrier of your choice, such as AT&T in the United States,” the unlocked iPhone 4 will undoubtedly be most popular with business users who travel. Users who don’t want to sign a two-year contract also might be interested in an unlocked iPhone.

The unlocked iPhone 4 ships without a micro-SIM card, so users will need an active micro-SIM card from any supported GSM carrier worldwide, which would allow users to swap SIM cards out as they travel from country to country without paying roaming charges.

The only other major GSM carrier in the United States is T-Mobile USA.
