Verizon Offers $240 Pixel Smartphone, Extra Gig of Data to Wireless Subs Who Send Gift Cards

By Diana Goovaerts | November 23, 2016

Verizon on Wednesday launched yet another new promotion just in time for the holiday rush: an extra gig of data for wireless subs who send gift cards.

According to the carrier, Verizon customers will receive 1 GB of bonus data when they send a $50 gift card for Sephora, Cabela’s, Chili’s, Bass Pro, Lowe’s, or Macaroni Grill to friends or family on any carrier. The gift cards must be sent through the Verizon Messages+ app, the carrier said, which also allows customers to send eGifts to loved ones for 45 different retailers (though only the six specified will get customers the extra gig).

Verizon said there is a limit of 1 GB of bonus data per each of the six participating brands, for a total of 6 GB of bonus data. The data will be applied immediately to impact the subscriber’s current billing cycle, Verizon said.

The promotion will run from Black Friday through December 31, Verizon said.

That offer comes on top of Verizon’s other headline-grabbing Black Friday deal: a more than $400 discount on Google’s new Pixel smartphone.

The carrier on Tuesday said it would offer the new 32 GB Pixel for $10 per month on a 24-month installment plan (for a total of $240) and the 128 GB model for $15 per month over the same two-year span (totaling $360). That offer is available on Thanksgiving and Black Friday only, Verizon said.

The Pixel price cut isn’t just a Black Friday ploy – it also comes amid a price battle between the carrier and rival T-Mobile, which waged a battle to win over fans of the new device. The Un-carrier offered up to $325 back to customers who brought their Pixel to T-Mobile in an attempt to lure subscribers away from Verizon, which was named Google’s exclusive carrier partner for the device.

For those who don’t want to wade into the rush, Verizon said it will also offer $200 off any Android Smartphone priced $400 or higher when subscribers switch to Verizon or add a line to an existing account. Additionally, current customers who upgrade will save $100 on any Android smartphone priced at $400 or higher. That deal will run from Thanksgiving through Sunday, Nov. 27.
