WiMAX Companies: On Their Marks, Ready to Go

Leading WiMAX equipment and semiconductor vendors with products poised to receive an official WiMAX certification stamp from the WiMAX Forum are preparing for a fast rollout of their newly certified products. In August, Airspan Networks, Aperto Networks, Proxim, Sequans and Wavesat delivered their respective WiMAX solutions to Cetecom Labs, in Malaga, Spain, for conformance and interoperability testing. This critical exercise ensures the stability of the test suite and readiness of the various solutions for formal conformance and radio testing.

Anritsu Corporation Opens Regional Office in India

Anritsu Corporation President Hiromichi Toda announces the opening of a sales and marketing office in Bangalore, India. The opening of the office allows Anritsu to expand its business in India.

PowerDsine to Participate in IEEE 802.3at Task Force

PowerDsine Ltd. announces that the IEEE 802.3 has officially created a new Task Force based on the objectives outlined by the IEEE’s PoEPlus Study Group. The new IEEE 802.3at Task Force will be responsible for creating an enhanced PoE standard, dubbed PoEPlus, that will provide increased power of at least 30 W to powered devices such as VoIP phones, WLAN APs and network security cameras.

Power-One Announces Suit against Artesyn Technologies

Power-One, Inc. announces that it filed a lawsuit on September 30, 2005 against Artesyn Technologies, Inc., for infringement of United States Patent Nos. 6,936,999 (the ‘999 patent, issued August 30, 2005) and 6,949,916 (the ‘916 patent, issued September 27, 2005) held by Power-One. The suit was filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, Marshall Division.

Virtio Enters into Agreement with TI

Virtio Corporation announces that Texas Instruments has entered into a one-year agreement with Virtio to leverage Virtio’s Virtual Platform for several of TI’s solutions, including its OMAP&#153 platform for mobile devices. By using the Virtio Platform to speed software development schedules, TI is enabling customers and third parties to more rapidly introduce new devices and applications into the marketplace based on TI technology.

Toshiba Tapes Out First UniversalArray Chip with Cadence Encounter

Cadence Design Systems announces that Toshiba Corporation and Toshiba Microelectronics Corporation successfully taped out the first UniversalArray&#153 (UA) chip with Cadence&reg Encounter&reg digital IC implementation. SoC Encounter&reg Global Physical Synthesis (GPS) helped provide a substantial decrease in turnaround time. Toshiba has already started work on its second UA ASIC Design with SoC Encounter.

Asia Pacific will Represent 45% of WiMAX Market by 2009

Though WiMAX faces several key challenges in the Asia Pacific market, its subscriber base will grow from over 80,000 in 2005 to over 3.8 million by 2009, reports In-Stat. In 2009, Asia Pacific WiMAX subscribers will account for 45% of the world total, the high-tech market research firm says.

Mouser Electronics and Sharp Microelectronics Enter into Distribution Agreement

Mouser Electronics announces that it has entered into a distribution agreement with Sharp Microelectronics of the Americas. This distribution agreement will enhance Sharp’s delivery of its optoelectronic, microcontroller/system-on-chip, voltage regulator, Flash memory and solid state relay components to design engineers in the early design-in and prototyping stages of the design cycle.

FOCUS Receives Silicon for 880 Mb/s Ultra Wideband Chip

FOCUS Enhancements has received the first silicon for its high performance 880 Mb/s wireless Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip. The FOCUS Enhancements’ analog/RF chip is the first chip of a two-part chipset solution in FOCUS Enhancements’ TALARIA&#153.

Casio-Hitachi Designs Two New Wireless Handsets with Fast Spansion NOR Flash Memory

Spansion LLC and Fujitsu Limited announce that Casio Hitachi Mobile Communications has developed two cellular handsets with 512 Mb NOR Flash memory, which uses stacked versions of Spansion’s WS256N, a NOR Flash memory device based on the company’s award-winning MirrorBit&#153 technology.

Micron Technology Reports Results

Micron Technology, Inc., announces results of operations for its 2005 fiscal year and fourth quarter, which ended September 1. For the 2005 fiscal year, the company earned net income of $188 million, or $0.29 per diluted share, on net sales of $4.88 billion. For the fourth quarter, the company earned net income of $43 million, or $0.07 per diluted share, on net sales of $1.26 billion. These quarterly results compare to a net loss of $128 million, or $0.20 per diluted share, on net sales of $1.05 billion for the third quarter of fiscal 2005.

Optichron and Digi-Key Sign Worldwide Distribution Agreement

Optichron, Inc. and Digi-Key Corporation announce that they have entered into an agreement for worldwide distribution of Optichron’s complete lineup of A/D converter module products.

Microfabrica Expands Operations

Microfabrica announces that it has moved its factory and corporate headquarters from Burbank to a new facility in Van Nuys, California, spurred by the company’s growth. The new site is 39,300 square feet, nearly twice the size of the previous location.

Modelithics Expands Maury Microwave Equipment Installation

Modelithics has recently acquired a 0.3 to 6 GHz Maury Microwave Noise Parameter Test System to expand the frequency range covered by the solid-state tuner-based noise parameter system it is currently using for 2 to 26 GHz measurements. Modelithics also uses Maury ATS load/source pull equipment for development and validation of its growing non-linear transistor model library, as well as its custom measurement and modeling services.

SK Telecom to Roll Out Ember-enabled ZigBee Services

SK Telecom will roll out a new &quotdigital smart home&quot service. It will enable customers to monitor and control their homes remotely using cell phones and the Internet, through SK Telecom’s service offerings. A key enabler of SK Telecom’s Intelligent Home Network Service is a ZigBee wireless networking technology from Ember Corporation. ZigBee, a global wireless industry standard that addresses the unique needs of remote monitoring, control and sensor networks, has become the preferred technology for home automation and control, among other applications.

Avaya Signs Five-year Global IP Telephony Contract with ABN AMRO

Avaya announces a five-year global contract with ABN AMRO to support the international bank’s migration to IP telephony across 14 countries. The project entails a complete technology update, including systems and software to provide a significant number of ABN AMRO employees with access to advanced Avaya business communications applications across the bank’s branch offices, headquarters and contact center locations around the world. Avaya Global Services will provide outsourced management of the project and solutions.

RFMD Extends Leadership in Power Amplifiers

RF Micro Devices, Inc. announces that it has extended its leadership in power amplifiers, as the company has commenced shipments of highly integrated transmit modules to multiple handset manufacturers. Transmit modules are comprised of RFMD’s industry-leading power amplifiers with integrated pHEMT switch technology.

Bluetooth Product Shipments More Than Double Again

According to InStat, Bluetooth is firmly established as a short-range wireless solution for voice and data transmission, as 2005 will be the fourth consecutive year in which Bluetooth-enabled product shipments more than double, reports In-Stat. This year’s shipments are forecast to be 316 million units, a total that will rise to 866 million in 2009, the high-tech market research firm says.

AWR Partners with Flomerics

Applied Wave Research Inc. (AWR&reg) announces a partnership that will enable Microwave/RF engineers analyzing circuit layouts using AWR’s Microwave Office&reg software to study the electromagnetic performance of key components in 3D using the MicroStripes software from Flomerics.

ACG Identification Technologies GmbH announces that it has received ITSO certification for five types of its smart cards, namely the Philips Mifare&reg Ultralight, Philips Mifare&reg DesFire, Philips Mifare&reg 1k, Philips Mifare&reg 4k and Infineon Mifare&reg 1k.

Lansdale Semiconductor Introduces 77 RF/IF ICs

Lansdale Semiconductor, Inc., president, R. Dale Lillard, announces the company’s acquisition of 77 Radio Frequency/Intermediate Frequency (RF/IF) Integrated Circuits (ICs) built with bipolar, CMOS and BiCMOS technologies. Phase-locked loop functions, frequency synthesizers, prescalers, VCOs and mixers account for 31 of the 77 parts, with the balance divided among 15 RF/IF amplifiers, receivers, transmitters and front-end ICs, 19 telecommunications ICs and 12 ICs with miscellaneous functions.
