NEW YORK (AP) — BlackBerry maker Research In Motion may unveil details of a new tablet computer aimed at competing with Apple’s iPad as early as today.
The company, which is based in Canada, is playing host to a conference of BlackBerry software developers in San Francisco from Monday through Thursday. RIM may use the event to introduce a new tablet and mobile operating system, according to a report last week in The Wall Street Journal.
The new gadget will have a 7-inch touch-screen — smaller than the iPad’s 9.7 inches — and at least one built-in camera, the Journal reported.
Apple has kick-started the market for tablet computers with the iPad, selling 3.3 million of them in its first three months on sale.
Now competitors are chasing the company’s success. Computer maker Dell released a cell phone/tablet hybrid called the Streak last month. Cisco plans to release a business-oriented tablet called the Cius next year and Samsung will release a device called the Galaxy Tab.
