A Malaysian newspaper reported that AT&T is looking to buy a stake in the mobile arm of the state-controlled telecom.
Telekom Malaysia previously announced plans to spin off its mobile business into a separate firm called TM International. The spin-off will include domestic wireless operations as well as operations in nine other countries, including India, Indonesia, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
The report in the Malaysian Reserve, citing unnamed sources, said that TM International is likely to look for a strategic partner that will enable it to enter the Vietnam market; AT&T recently began operations there. The paper said the size of the stake AT&T may be acquiring is unclear. An AT&T spokesperson said the company had no comment on the report at this time.
