Update: Shares of Foxconn were down almost 3 percent Monday, after an explosion on Friday destroyed one of the company’s facilities that manufactures Apple’s iPad 2. Three people died in the explosion, and the company said it was closing the facility for an undertermined amount of time, pending an investigation, according to a report posted at Fortune.com.
Multiple media outlets Friday reported an explosion at Foxconn’s Chengdu factory in China, where Apple has outsourced the manufacturing of a variety of products.
Foxconn reported in an official statement that the explosion killed at least two people and injured 16.
Bloomberg is reporting that production at the factory has been suspended while local police investigate. The blast took place at 7 p.m. local time on May 20.
According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, the blast took place at a “polishing plant,” while Bloomberg and TechCrunch reported that the explosion took place at a facility where the iPad 2 is manufactured.
It was not immediately known what caused the explosion.
