By Wireless Week staff | August 2, 2012

Consumers with access to LTE are consuming up to 50 percent more data than those on legacy networks, according to a joint report released Wednesday by Mobidia Technology and Informa Telecoms & Media. The report also found that while Android users consume more cellular data than iPhone users, iPhone users habit of accessing Wi-Fi hotspots increases their overall data consumption to an average of 37 percent more than Android users.

Apple‘s iPhone growth outpaced Google’s Android platform between March and June, according to the latest numbers from comScore. Android rose 0.6 percentage points to 51.6 percent of the U.S. smartphone market, while Apple’s market share rose 1.7 percentage points to 32.4 percent. The two platforms continued to steal market share from BlackBerry, Windows Phone and Symbian.

U.S. Cellular is taking the wraps off two Android smartphones from Motorola Mobility. The Electrify 2 measures in at 8.4 millimeters thick and comes equiped with a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor and 4.3-inch display. It went on sale online yesterday for $180 with data plan and two-year contract, and will be available in stores today. The water- and scratch-resistant Defy XT will go on sale tomorrow.

SIM-only MVNO Simple Mobile has dropped the price of its unlimited plan by $10. Its $60 unlimited plan now costs $50 per month for all-you-can-eat voice, text and data access on T-Mobile’s network. Simple Mobile was acquired by Tracfone Wireless in May for an undisclosed sum.
