The 4G World 2012 Conference and Expo is pushing out the deadline for entries in its annual Best of 4G Awards program to Friday, Sept. 21. The awards span categories from small cells to spectrum optimization. Winners will be announced at the conference, which runs from Oct. 29-Nov. 1 at McCormick Place in Chicago.

Nokia says its location division is providing European reference data for Ford’s emergency roadside assistance program. The technology identifies the location of drivers who need help and determines the appropriate language for emergency call center operators. The language features uses geofences from Nokia-provided reference data to define country borders and regional subdivisions effecting language.

Consumer Cellular’s latest smartphone is the Huawei 8652, an Android device with a 3.5-inch display, 600 MHz processor and 3.2 megapixel camera. The phone retails for $100 and is available with five different data plans. Consumer Cellular is the exclusive wireless provider for AARP members, and offers handset models targeted at beginner users.

Qualcomm today kicked off the 2012 AllJoyn Peer-2-Peer App Challenge for developers. Qualcomm invites app developers to submit apps using AllJoyn, Qualcomm Innovation Center’s open-source, application development framework. The developers of the winning apps will compete for total cash and prizes worth more than $170,000. Contest categories include: best overall app, best educational app, best gaming app and best social app, as well as awards for best multiscreen experience and people’s choice awards.
