FirstNews Briefs: AT&T, AirPatrol, VMware, ViaSat, LG, Boost

By Wireless Week staff | August 13, 2014

Starting today in company-owned retail stores, AT&T is offering a new promotion  for iPhone 5s and 5c buyers who choose AT&T Next to get $200 off a new iPad purchased on a 2-year wireless agreement. The customer must sign a two-year wireless agreement for the iPad and use AT&T Next to purchase the iPhone. AT&T is also offering an iPad mini with Wi-Fi + Cellular 16GB (non-retina model) for $199.99 after the purchase of an iPhone 5s or 5c.

AirPatrol Corporation, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sysorex Global Holdings Corp., today announced a new add-in for its ZoneDefense 5 mobile device security platform that will allow organizations using the Enterprise Mobility Management suite from VMware’s AirWatch to automatically switch security policies of smartphones and tablets based on the device’s owner and location. AirPatrol’s ZoneDefense 5 for AirWatch allows systems administrators to create “hot zones” that can change the features, apps and content available on an AirWatch-managed device when it enters the area. The hot zones can be as large as an entire building or as small as an office cubicle.

Beginning Monday, August 18, ViaSat Inc. will offer Exede high-speed satellite internet plans that provide households in select locations across the country with virtually unlimited data usage (at least 150 GBs of monthly data without a strict data allowance) for communications, web browsing, and streaming media. The new “Freedom” plan will be initially offered along portions of the Eastern Seaboard and the Gulf Coast; select counties in California, Arizona, and Minnesota; and across most of Alaska, Hawaii, and Florida.

The LG Realm comes to Boost Mobile for $79.99. The LG Realm features Android 4.4 Kit Kat, a 4.5” Touchscreen, 1.2 GHz dual core processor, 5MP camera / VGA front-facing camera, HD Voice, and a 2100mAh battery.
