• Delta Telecom, a service provider in the Caucasus region, has awarded a contract to Alcatel-Lucent to deploy Azerbaijan’s first commercial WiMAX 802.16e-2005 (Rev. E) network. This new network will accommodate stationary, nomadic and mobile applications and will complement Delta Telecom’s existing fixed broadband services in sparsely populated areas. Alcatel-Lucent will supply infrastructure and services to both deploy WiMAX and modernize Delta Telecom’s nationwide carrier backbone infrastructure. The end-to-end solution includes base stations, WiMAX access controllers, terminals, an IMS core network and applications software and platforms. Alcatel-Lucent also will provide design and planning for end-to-end integration of the network as well as provisioning services for Delta Telecom’s network.
• Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) has completed the transition of responsibility for Embarq’s voice network operation center (NOC) function. The 7-year agreement between the companies was announced June 12, 2008. NSN will perform network operations for Embarq’s voice networks. Approximately 265 Embarq employees in the network operation centers in New Century, Kan.; Johnson City, Tenn.; Leesburg, Fla.; and Greenville, N.C.; are now NSN employees.
• Vringo has appointed three new members to its team. Sharon Goldstein has accepted a seat on the Vringo advisory board; Amir Kirshenboim has taken on the role of vice president of product development; and Josh Shabtai has been named vice president of marketing. Goldstein, who will join Andy Abramson, Jeff Belk, Howard Handler and Ralph Simon, is a marketing and strategy expert focused on mobile technologies and content services, and founder of the consulting firm SYG LLC. Kirshenboim joins Vringo with more than 10 years of experience in product definition, project management and research and development. Shabtai comes to Vringo from Ketchum Public Relations.
• SMobile Systems announced the launch of its Secure Mobile Banking and Trading (SMBT) endpoint security solution for financial institutions and consumers. By implementing SMobile’s SMBT endpoint security solution on smartphones and mobile handsets, mobile trading and banking will be protected from malware and external attacks by protecting the mobile device itself, the company said.
• Singapore’s MobileOne Ltd. (M1) has selected Streamezzo‘s platform and professional services team to develop and run MiWorld Go, its new mobile music and video service. MiWorld Go is a free application that lets subscribers preview music and video content before purchasing. Streamezzo’s software drives the application, which consists of a downloadable thin client for rendering multimedia content on the handset. MiWorld Go is available on more than 20 handsets including Symbian and Java phones.
