A new survey says American consumers want to let their fingers do the walking.
The survey released by AuthenTec says 77% of consumers like the idea of using fingerprint authentication as part of their day-to-day activities. The survey says the most desired use of fingerprint authentication is in online banking, PC security and electronic commerce.
Despite the interest, AuthenTec says the survey showed most Americans are unaware that fingerprint sensors are available on cell phones or laptops. Nearly half those surveyed said they thought there are fewer than 1 million fingerprint sensors in use, although AuthenTec has shipped 25 million of them.
Americans overwhelmingly favor the security of fingerprint authentication over passwords or PINs, and they also think using sensors would be more convenient.
