Google says more than three-quarters of all Android devices on the market today are running either 2.1 Éclair or 2.2 Froyo.
According to data collected by Google for the two weeks before Nov. 1, 40.8 percent of all Android devices are running Éclair and 36.2 percent are running Froyo. Fifteen percent are running Android 1.6 Donut and about eight percent are running Android 1.5 Cupcake, the first iteration of the platform.
Éclair has been installed in more than a quarter of all Android devices since May, Google reported. Froyo ramped quickly starting in August, but has yet to overtake Éclair.
According to estimates from NPD Group, Android is the top platform in the U.S. smartphone market. The OS was installed in 44 percent of all smartphones purchased over the course of the third quarter, with Apple’s iOS holding 23 percent and BlackBerry coming in with 22 percent.
