Walmart will not sell the Apple iPhone until Dec. 28, employees at multiple stores across the nation said this morning. Training is happening this week and activations will be required in the store, but there probably won’t be a discount price, the electronics department workers said.

The post-Christmas date is two weeks later than what employees said earlier this week. The reason for the delay is not known.

Selling the phone in Walmart marks a new era of mass-market acceptance for smartphones in general. Originally, the iPhone was only available in Apple and AT&T stores, later expanding to BestBuy.

Apple has not commented on the Walmart story, but did announce an iPhone gift card today. The card itself isn’t different from a generic Apple store card, other than its logo. But customers can go online using the card’s number to schedule a personal shopping and configuration session.
