Motorola Debuts WiMAX VoIP Modem

Motorola is showing off a new WiMAX modem that supports data and voice through a VoIP port. The CPEi825 comes equipped with MIMO functionality and can be remotely managed.

“The CPEi 825 is based on Motorola’s proven WiMAX CPE experience gained from the performance of our devices in dozens of networks operating around the world,” said Bruce Brda, senior vice president, Motorola Networks in a statement. “This is our fourth-generation WiMAX CPE platform, and with each generation, we build in more functionality while driving down the prices so our operators can compete more effectively.”

The device features signal strength indicators and data and voice status indicators on the front of the device that are visible from a greater than 240-degree view angle, giving users a simplified way of checking the status of the device.

The CPEi 825 will be available in the 2.3GHz, 2.5GHz and 3.5GHz bands beginning in the third quarter of this year.

Motorola says it had shipped more than 2 million WiMAX devices by February, including dongles and customer premise equipment like the CPEi825, just five months after it shipped its 1 millionth device in September 2009.

Motorola recently landed a lucrative contract with Mexican carrier AXTEL for additional customer premises equipment units. AXTEL hired Motorola in 2008 to build out fixed WiMAX service across Mexico and plans to eventually offer nomadic WiMAX service on its network.  Motorola currently has 40 WiMAX contracts with global operators.
