Mobile business messaging company OpenMarket and communication platform as a service provider Ecrio this week said they’ve successfully completed a proof-of-concept demonstration of rich communication services (RCS) application-to-person (A2P) messaging on T-Mobile’s network.
The Un-carrier reportedly has the largest active base of RCS subscribers in the United States.
According to the pair, the test was specific to Internet of Things use cases and was meant to highlight how brands will be able to use RCS A2P messaging. As more consumers light up connected devices in their homes, the companies said RCS A2P messaging will enable those devices to send data and other real-time visuals to consumers in the form of high resolution photos, animated gifs, and videos. OpenMarket claimed more than 90 percent of SMS messages are read within three minutes of opening, making them the perfect way to convey IoT data to users.
“We are very pleased to have certified our RCS compliant CPaaS with T-Mobile, to enable the feature-rich RCS A2P messaging without any change in the operator infrastructure,” Michel Gannage, founder and CEO of Ecrio, commented. “With the OpenMarket partnership, businesses, and brands can now serve consumers via next generation mobile messaging, creating a superior experience and increasing customer engagement and loyalty.”
OpenMarket showcased RCS and IoT at LiveWorx last month in Boston. The demonstration highlighted how Samsung’s Smart City modules can be used to detect events like tilting utility poles in need of repair. The poles include IoT sensors that trigger an SMS or RCS alert to the maintenance crew’s mobile device with the amount of tilt and a detailed map pinpointing the exact coordinates of the pole. By using mobile messaging, a city would be able to disseminate critical information via RCS without ever having to build and maintain a separate mobile app, OpenMarket said.
