The European Space Agency says GOCE, one of its research satellites re-entered the Earth’s atmosphere at 0000 GMT Monday Nov. 11, 2013 on a descending orbit pass that extended across Siberia, the western Pacific Ocean, the eastern Indian Ocean and Antarctica. It says that while the 1,100 kilogram satellite disintegrated in the atmosphere, about 25 percent of it – about 275 kilograms of “space junk” fragments – slammed into the Atlantic Ocean between Antarctica and South America, a few hundred kilometers from the Falkland Islands according to current estimates.
