SAN FRANCISCO – Qualcomm released an SDK for its Vuforia augmented reality (AR) platform. The Vuforia SDK for Digital Eyewear is designed specifically to work with Samsung’s Oculus-powered Gear VR, the Epson Moverio BT-200, and the ODG R-7.
The SDK is geared toward helping create “applications in hybrid VR/AR gaming, shopping, and education, as well as across a wide range of enterprise and industrial uses.”
Vuforia uses Snapdragon in the hopes of limiting latency. But the primary focus of the SDK is to simplify calibration between 3D-rendered graphics in the display and real-world objects in the background.
“Developers will now have the tools required to build experiences that will drive the adoption of the digital eyewear category. We look forward to seeing what developers make possible,” Jay Wright, vice president of product management for Qualcomm Connected Experiences, said in a statement.
Speaking at an Uplinq panel Thursday, Qualcomm Senior Vice President Rob Chandhok said the use cases Qualcomm sees for connected eyewear in the pipeline for the next 1-2 years are really incredible.
Qualcomm has seen more than 125 million Vuforia-enabled apps installed and estimates more than 100,000 developers working with the platform.
The R-7 was just announced today. The one-piece design smart glasses feature a stereoscopic see-through display system, wireless connectivity and a Snapdragon 805 processor.
