Apple could push its iPhone into phablet territory if reports of Cupertino slapping a 5.7-inch display on its flagship prove true.

Reuters is citing four people with knowledge of the matter in a report saying Apple is considering next year rolling out 4.7- and 5.7-inch models of its iPhone. The sources claim that suppliers have been approached with plans for the larger phones.

Apple rival Samsung has seen much success with its phablet, the Galaxy Note 2, which sports a 5.5-inch display and comes with an attached stylus. Samsung’s first quarter revenue rose 42 percent annually, a boost partly attributed to the success of the Note 2. Samsung is expected to release a follow-up this year.

While Apple considers going super-size with its flagship, Reuters reports that 2013 will see the release of two new iPhones: the “5S” with fingerprint recognition technology and a plastic model reportedly priced at $99. The cheaper iPhone will apparently come in several different colors, like the iPod.

Test production for both models is believed to begin in July and Apple is reportedly eying a September release for the new iPhones.
