Verizon Wireless has begun the first over-the-air firmware update for the Droid. The update aims to smooth some of the rough edges of the otherwise well-received Motorola Droid smartphone.
The Droid will be the first device to run Android 2.0.1. According to Verizon Wireless’ Web site, users who choose to install the update will need to have at least 40 percent battery charge if their device is unplugged and around 20 percent if their device is plugged into a power source.
Verizon Wireless spokeswoman Brenda Raney said the update will happen in phases and began yesterday with a small group. “It will probably take about a week or so before everybody has it,” she said.
According to the company’s Web site, the update includes a long list of enhancements that range from better battery life to better Bluetooth functionality. Raney said it’s important to note that while the list of updates is extensive, not every customer experienced all of the deficiencies.
