Cricket Doubles Data Buckets

By Ben Munson | September 10, 2014

LAS VEGAS – Cricket Wireless today announced a limited-time offer of up to double the data for its Basic, Pro and Smart plans.

Starting Sept. 13, the $40 Basic plan jumps to 1GB from 500MB, the $50 Pro plan jumps to 3GB from 2.5GB, and the $60 Smart plan jumps to 10GB from 5GB. All three plans receive a $5 discount when customers sign up for auto pay.

Existing Cricket customers will automatically receive the larger data allotments.

This new offer from Cricket joins its existing limited-time deal offering a $100 bill credit to customers who switch over from T-Mobile or MetroPCS. That offer is extended through Oct. 19.

Cricket CEO Jennifer Van Buskirk said Cricket is targeting T-Mobile and MetroPCS as part of its plan to stay aggressive.

“Launching a new Cricket and driving growth means we have to be shifting share,” Van Buskirk said. “We’re in it to win it.”

AT&T finished its acquisition of Cricket earlier this year and has since folded its old Aio Wireless prepaid brand into Cricket and is working to put all Crickets customers on one network. Van Buskirk said the carrier is ahead of schedule in migrating over pre-acquisition Cricket customers from the Cricket’s CDMA network to AT&T’s GSM/LTE network.

Cricket has also been busy expanding its retail presence. Van Buskirk said Cricket now has more than 3,000 retail stores in more than 1,000 U.S. cities. The carrier also recently announced a partnership with GameStop that will have the video game retailer sell Cricket service and select devices in their stores. The carrier expects to be in more than 3,000 GameStops by the end of October.

As part of that deal, credit earned from selling games, phones and other used products can be applied toward Cricket service and phones.
