In more settlement news from Nokia, the handset maker announced an agreement to settle its patent-infringement suits with InterDigital in the U.K.
Nokia filed a suit against InterDigital, which owns patents for wireless technology that it claims are integral in 3G UMTS handsets, in the U.K., claiming that InterDigital’s 31 European patents were not essential to UMTS standards. In 2006, InterDigital counter-sued; the company also filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission in 2007 saying that Nokia was engaging in unfair trade practices.
No financial or other terms of the settlement were announced, though the agreement does close both U.K. cases.
Nokia and InterDigitial are still in a patent dispute in the U.S. courts.
InterDigitial is also in a patent dispute with Samsung.
