Sprint Retail Expansion Continues to Roll Across Five States

By Diana Goovaerts | July 24, 2017

Sprint’s push to expand its retail footprint is still underway, with announcements of new store openings in five states.

The carrier said it has opened new stores in Indiana, and also revealed plans to add locations in Washington state, Oregon, Florida, New York, and New Jersey.

The Indiana openings include five stores in Indianapolis. Those locations will hold grand opening events on August 5 and 6.

The planned launches in the other four states include stores in Orlando, Tampa, St. Petersburg, Jacksonville, and Gainesville, Fla.; 43 stores in New York City, Long Island, and the lower Hudson Valley; 21 stores in New Jersey; nine stores in Portland, Ore.; and 12 stores throughout Washington state. Sprint said the moves are expected to create more than 700 new jobs, including at least 300 jobs across New York and New Jersey, and more than 300 jobs in Florida.

“This is the fastest Sprint has grown across Florida in many years,” Claudio Hidalgo, Sprint’s region president for Florida, Puerto Rico, and U.S. Virgin Islands, commented. “We see a lot of continued opportunity for expansion across the state. And, our growth over the last year has already been well-received by customers, so we’re excited to continue to drive this momentum.”

The latest news comes in addition to previously announced plans to add 60 stores in New England, 79 locations in Texas, 38 new stores in Milwaukee, and 15 new stores in Miami and South Florida.

But Sprint isn’t the only U.S. wireless carrier widening its retail footprint.

During T-Mobile’s second quarter earnings call last week, CEO John Legere noted the Un-carrier has opened stores in more than 400 new cities and towns so far this year. The company is also 1,100 stores into its plan to open 1,500 MetroPCS stores. All told, Legere said T-Mobile is on track to have 17,000 T-Mobile and MetroPCS-branded stores across the country by the end of this year.
