T-Mobile Steps up Attack Ads, Includes Verizon

By Andrew Berg | January 13, 2011

T-Mobile USA has launched a new attack ad that takes aim at Verizon Wireless and AT&T Mobility, lumping them both into one category of carriers that carry the iPhone on what T-Mobile calls “slow networks.”

According to T-Mobile, the new ad is called “Identity” and compares T-Mobile head-to-head with AT&T and Verizon. The ad features a similar look and feel to the carrier’s recent myTouch 4G ads and attempts to show “that there’s no fun in having a great device running on a slow network.”

Similar to Apple’s Mac and iPhone ads that pitted “Mac” against “Windows,” T-Mobile features two men in suits that look exactly alike save for their red and blue ties. Not surprisingly, the man with the red tie introduces himself as Verizon and the man in the blue tie introduces himself as AT&T. A younger man identifies himself as the iPhone and T-Mobile’s spokesperson announces herself as the myTouch 4G.

“How can you tell them apart?” the woman (myTouch 4G) asks the younger man (iPhone). “Does one of them have nationwide 4G like me?”

“Nope,” the iPhone replies, “I’m pretty much slow with either one.”

At CES, T-Mobile was aggressive in its insistence that its HSPA+ network will offer speeds comparable to Verizon Wireless’ LTE network. Verizon has launched its LTE network in 38 markets nationwide, and AT&T has committed to completion of its LTE rollout by 2013.

Both AT&T and T-Mobile are calling HSPA+ a 4G technology, which has become a point of contention amongst the carriers in their advertising.
